The 13th Amendment abolished slavery EXCEPT for one significant loophole: "…except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted…"

"13th" examines the loophole’s past and present consequences. It spans the treatment of African Americans as criminal from the end of Reconstruction to the present. It is impossible to understand the reality of mass incarceration without knowing this history. It is a challenging film, best suited for high school students and adults.
