More information about the film:
ORIGIN is a film by director Ava DuVernay, based on Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. It offers a powerful exploration of the hierarchy that has shaped America, and demonstrates how lives today are still defined by a system of ranked human divisions.
The film chronicles Wilkerson’s search, following the murder of Trayvon Martin, for a better understanding of societal systems that rank some people as more important than others. In her search she explores how the United States, India and Nazi Germany created rigid hierarchical systems of ranking from which the people at the bottom could not escape.
The story of her travels and research rests within a series of tender personal life moments in Wilkerson’s life, including meeting her husband and her mother’s failing mental acuity. Both a Pulitzer Prize winning black journalist and a woman juggling personal commitments, Wilkerson is on a quest to peel back a curtain of history to reveal the truth about a reality she comes to see as “caste.”
